The Sentence

We engage in conversation, convey our thoughts and exchange information with others on a regular basis.

How do we do all of this?

Simple – we either speak or write!

Sentences play an important role here. A set of words form a sentence and a set of sentences help us express ourselves.

Let’s learn more about the sentence and its different types!

A sentence has three main characteristics :

  1. It is a set of words which express a complete thought.
  2. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.
  • It has a subject (topic) and predicate (what is said about the subject).

Types of Sentences

1. A declarative sentence states a fact and ends with a full stop/ period.

  • It is raining heavily.
  • Sheena is eating an apple.

2. An imperative sentence is a command or a polite request and ends with an exclamation mark or a full stop/ period.

  • Shut the door when you leave.
  • Could you pass me the pen?

3. An interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark.

  • Are you participating in the event?
  • Will you make any donation?

4. An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark.

  • I won the lottery!
  • What a beautiful house!
